Are you ready to
explore Bangkok, “The Angle City of Thailand”
The Kingdom of Thailand, located in Southeast Asia on the Gulf of
Thailand and the Andaman Sea, shares boundaries with Myanmar (Burma)
on the west and northwest, Laos on the east and northeast, Cambodia
(Kampuchea) on the southeast, and Malaysia on the south. The
capital,
BANGKOK,
an attractive blend of Western and Thai architecture, was
established in 1782.
Siam
is the name by which the country was known to the world until 1939
and again between 1945 and 1949.
Until May 11, 1949, an official proclamation changed the name of the
country to
"Prathet Thai",
or "Thailand",
by which it has since been known. The word "Thai"
means "free",
and therefore "Thailand" means "Land
of the Free."
It is well known that throughout the country’s 800-year history,
Thailand is only country in Southeast Asia that have never been
colonized and has existed as a unified monarchy since 1350.
The people in this area was influenced by various cultures, from the
Indians in the 3rd Century, the Mons between the 6th to the 11th
Century, and the Khmers who built the wondrous Angkor Wat and who
also left their legacy in the form of numerous stone sanctuaries
scattered across the Thai Kingdom.
It is believed that Thailand dominant culture have arrived with the
tribes who moved down from southern China thousand years ago. They
settled in what is now northern Thailand before expanding south to
the rich plains and valleys, gradually asserting their independence
from existing Khmer and Mon Kingdoms.
However, there are conflicting opinions as to the origins of the
Thais. Three decades ago it could be said with presumed certainty
that the Thais originated in Northwestern Szechuan in China about
4,500 years ago and later migrated down to their present homeland.
However, this theory has been altered by the discovery of remarkable
prehistoric artifacts in the village of Ban Chiang in the Nong Han
District of Udon Thani Province in the
Northeast.
These include evidence of painted pottery, bronze, jewellery, iron
tools and bronze metallurgy going back 3,500 years, as well as other
indications of a far more sophisticated culture than any previously
suspected by archaeologists. Furthermore, The Ban Chiang people,
farmed rice, domesticated their animals, and were skillful potters.
It now appears that the a Thais might have originated here in
Thailand and later scattered to various parts of Asia, including
some parts of China.
But even before human beings roamed the northeastern plateau, the
region was once home to a more ancient of animal the dinosaur, In
1984, fossils from a plant-eating dinosaur were found in Phu Wiang,
and was named Phuwiangosaurus Siamontyrannus isanensis, a fierce
meat-eating ancestor of the infamous Tyrannosaurus rex.
