Meditation or Mental development
Two
Kinds of meditation
1.
Concentration meditation (Samatha Kammathan) which is the
way to make the mind peaceful or tranquil so as to make it
stable , clean and suitable for work performance .
2.
Insight meditation (Vipassana Kammathana) is the way of
developing transcendent insight which penetrate into the
truth of life or three characteristics of existence;
impermanence, suffering and non – self.

What is
Vipassana meditation?
Vipassana literally means to see clearly. The practice of
Vipassana or Insight Meditation is based on mindfulness or
awareness of all physical and mental phenomena as they occur
in the present moment. Through careful observation, the true
nature of the mind and body can be seen more clearly. The
wisdom that arises is through direct experience. While doing
walking or sitting meditation, one trains the mind to stay
in the present moment, not run to the past and not to race
to the future. As a result, one can understand the true
nature of body and mind and see the fleeting nature of all
phenomena as they arise and pass away on their own accord.
As well, we can understand that negative feelings such as
anger, sadness, greed or jealousy are condition of the mind,
and that external circumstances can not always to blame for
these negative states. Often we do not understand the mind /
body process because we have never really taken the time to
look at it carefully. By direct observation, one can clearly
see where the discontent originates. As a result, there is a
greater understanding of our own body, and the world which
we live.

Why Meditate?
Every
where in the world and in our communities people experience
the same problems and stressful situations experienced
throughout history. Unable to escape long lived evils
conflicts, jealousy, betrayal, exploitation, cheating, in
the endless pursuit of wealth, Status and praise they are
willing to tell lies, take revenge on each other. The
question is: whether this behavior is caused by the
environment or by human being themselves? Many religions
attempt to solve there problems and bring peace and
happiness to the world by teaching people to do well and
avoid evil. The Buddha taught that the only way to overcome
these negative conditions and sufferings in the world is to
start with purifying one’s own heat and mind. This mental
development is possible by practicing meditation. Negative
mental states are the cause of all destructive thoughts,
speech and action in the world. Mindful meditation can
reduce the power that these mental “pollutants” have over us
so we can live a more peaceful and happy life.
